Multicolored knit blanket with fuzzy texture draped over a wooden rail in a room with tiled ceiling and fluorescent lights.

(For Mary Ruth Coffman, 1927 - 2000)

You knit me together in my mother's womb.

I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

- Psalm 139:13b-14a

God, who flung the far galaxies

Who spangled the skies with stars,

God, who pushed up the mountains,

And hollowed out the oceans,

God, who created 150 billion plus galaxies.

You sit in a sewing rocker,

   Needles clicking,

   Gently rocking,

   Humming a lullaby of creation.

God of the Universe,

You are knitting life,

Tenderly weaving together

the heart of a new baby

   within the warmth and protection

   of a mother's womb.

You pause from your knitting

to kiss the earth with rain,

    to cradle a worn-out body,

    to cast a shooting star,

    to open a rose bud.

Gentle God, Knitting God, Crooning God,

God of the Universe and God of me,

May your name be praised.

Amen.

I wrote this years ago for my teacher, supervisor, mentor, and friend, Mary Ruth Coffman, Editor of Alive Now. I recently ran across it and realized I had never shared it. This is for all the knitters.
